Promoting Nuclear Disarmament in East Asia

In East Asia, nuclear disarmament, or even dialogue to achieve it, remains remote. The Korean Peninsula continues to face a severe confrontation. North Korea engages in nuclear and missile development while South Korea, the United States and Japan cooperate to strengthen nuclear deterrence. China is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal while the United States and its allies are countering by expanding their military capabilities and bolstering nuclear deterrence. Southeast Asian countries are seeking diplomatic approaches not trapped in the U.S.-China competition. They have formed the nuclear-weapon-free zone and joined the TPNW.
Under these circumstances, how can we promote nuclear disarmament in East Asia by transforming regional confrontation? This session will discuss this issue by considering diverse perspectives of the region.
