Born in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, in November 1981, from 2006 to 2015 Akmetov worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan; in 2017 he was a visiting scholar at the Monterey Institute for Nonproliferation Studies of the International Graduate School. Since February 2017, he has served as President of the Center for International Security Policy (CISP), an NGO working in the field of nuclear disarmament and international security. He also participated in the development and negotiations for the adoption of the Nuclear Weapons Convention, which was adopted in 2017.
