Hirabayashi is a special lecturer at Kyoto University. While a graduate student at Hiroshima University, she was involved in interview surveys of affected residents around the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in Kazakhstan, which she continues to do to this day. She specializes in peace studies, social (medical) studies, and research on nuclear damage.
