HATAKEYAMA Sumiko

Executive Committee Member, Peace Boat

Involved in "Global Voyage for a Nuclear Free World: Peace Boat Hibakusha Project" and the "Global University" educational program for young people at Peace Boat, Hatakeyama interpreted the speeches of the Hibakusha at the United Nations negotiation conference of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapoons in March 2017. Having participated in international conferences on nuclear disarmament, she has spoken at various venues on the international situation regarding nuclear weapons and the role of citizens. She currently teaches nuclear global history at Rikkyo University and Waseda University and also conducts a number of experiential and participatory programs on peace and war, including peace education workshops for elementary and junior high school students. She holds a B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from Cambridge University and a Ph.D. in History of Science and Technology from the University of Pennsylvania. Hatakeyama specializes in the global history of nuclear weapons and science, technology, and society. She is co-author of "Navigating Disarmament Education: The Peace Boat Model" from UNIDIR, and co-author of the manga book "Killer Robots Are Coming! From Military Drones to Robotic Weapons."
