Kazakhstan’s Nuclear Legacy and the TPNW: A Path to a Nuclear-Free Future

More than 400 nuclear tests were conducted over a period of 40 years during the former Soviet era in Kazakhstan, President of the Third Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW to be held in March this year.

In this session, Professor Kawano Noriyuki, Director of the Hiroshima University Peace Center, who has conducted research in Kazakhstan for many years, will speak about the damage inflicted on residents living near the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. Young activists in Kazakhstan will also speak online. In the latter half of the panel discussion, journalist Koyama Misa, who reported from Semipalatinsk last summer, and Japanese youth activist Tanaka Miho of Kakuwaka Hiroshima will join the discussion to explore Kazakhstan's role in the 3MSP and the potential of solidarity with Japan.
